Fluttering By for a cause!

As you have noticed recently, our team members have been picking the challenges for Flutter By Wednesday. This week, Harriet chose a very worthwhile cause, fittingly called the Butterfly Project. The following poem bears repeating from the link:

The Butterfly
The last, the very last,
So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.
Perhaps if the sun’s tears would sing against a white stone....
Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly ’way up high.
It went away I’m sure because it wished to kiss the world good-bye.
For seven weeks I’ve lived in here,
Penned up inside this ghetto.
But I have found what I love here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut branches in the court.
Only I never saw another butterfly.
That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto.
Pavel Friedman, June 4, 1942
Born in Prague on January 7, 1921.
Deported to the Terezin Concentration Camp on April 26, 1942.
Died in Aushchwitz on September 29, 1944.
Every time I have read and encountered this poem over the years, it gets me. The Butterfly project seeks 1.5 million handmade paper butterflies, one for each of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust. That number is staggering. The link I gave sends you to the Craft Critique website, and they are collecting them to send to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Please join us this week...we would love to see your creations, but don't forget to mail them to the people at Craft Critique. I'll be making more small ones with my daughter to send in, but this one was the focal point.
